Leuchtenbergia principis


Leuchtenbergia principis is the only species in the unique cactus family Leuchtenbergia. Resembling an Agave with long, tubercle limbs, this sun-loving plant is rarely found for sale this large. As it slowly matures, lower limbs drop from the plant where a corky, woody stalk forms. A highly sought genus, this plant was grown in a greenhouse and is listed as CITES II. Cacti and all plants should never be taken from the wild.

Native to North-Central Mexico.


These cacti prefer lots of sun, at least five hours of direct sun daily. It's recommended that you place this plant outdoors in direct sunlight during warmer months.  


Leuchtenbergia prefer to stay on the dry side. In the summer water them only when the soil has dried out entirely. Always error on the side of underwatering. They are built to withstand drought, and overwatering is one of the quickest ways to kill them.

Tula's Tip

Leuchtenbergia reliably flower from tubercle tips when given lots of sun and heat outdoors in the summer. They will produce one or more yellow flowers between spring and fall. Fertilize: These plants do not require fertilizer though it can be added to give container grown plants a boost or to supplement poor soil. Apply a water-soluble, balanced fertilizer monthly, diluted at half strength.
