Astrophytum myriostigma onzuka var. tricostatum
Astrophytum myriostigma onzuka var. tricostatum is an old cultivar with only three ribs containing dense white spots that cover the stem like a galaxy of stars. Some of the three ribbed specimens develop additional ribs as they age. Old Astrophytum myriostigma which maintain the typical three ribbed shape are rare and prized. Large funnel-shaped yellow flowers bloom from the areole at the tip of the stem on mature plants, at least 4-5 years old.

Astrophytum plants do best in full sun, at least 5 to 8 hours a day. Avoid intense afternoon sun. Grow outdoors in light shade or indoors in a sunny window with southern exposure and direct sun.
Astrophytum prefer to stay on the dry side. In the summer water them only when the soil has dried out entirely. Always err on the side of underwatering. They are built to withstand drought, and overwatering is one of the quickest ways to kill them.
Astrophytum plants flower once they’ve matured. This can take up to six years. Exposing your cactus to drought while it is dormant during the winter will encourage blooming during the growing season. Fertilize: Astrophytum do not require fertilizer though it can be added to give container grown plants a boost or to supplement poor soil. Apply a water-soluble, balanced fertilizer monthly, diluted at half strength.
