Guzmania lingulata is a tree-dwelling plant with hard bracts that have evolved to catch falling rainwater and debris. After it flowers, this plant enters a long death process, but sends out pups that can be propagated to give the plant new life. Please note: colors, shapes and sizes differ. Bright indirect light with a couple hours of direct sunlight is perfect.
Water these plants by filling the central leaf “cups” with water until it brims over the sides to the soil. Water again as soon as the cup looks nearly dry.
As the mother plant grows, keep an eye out for pups appearing at the plant’s base. Allow these plants to establish themselves, then snip off the pups. Fertilize: Fertilization isn’t necessary, but a dash of bromeliad fertilizer to the soaking bath can be applied during waterings in summer to increase growth.
