East Williamsburg
Like many underutilized garden areas, the backyard of our client’s East Williamsburg home felt more like a weed jungle than an inviting outdoor retreat. A mix of overgrown planted spaces and paved portions, the yard was ripe for transformation.
The goal was to create a space that felt livable and intentional. Tula House came on board to design a functional and relaxing garden, perfect for everyday enjoyment and engagement with the outdoors.
Achieving Balance
Drawing inspiration from the client’s South of France roots, we sought both the structure and loose flow of a classic French garden. We wanted the space to feel relaxed and natural, but not random — thoughtfully composed yet still not fussy.
Plants for the Project
To harmonize shifting seasons and year-round visual interest, the Tula House horticulturists selected a blend of perennials and evergreens.
Trees
- Japanese Maple: Contributes texture, elegance, and rich color, while softening hardscapes.
- Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’: As the name implies, this slender, tidy tree adds verticality, while its evergreen consistency makes it an appealing presence in the space all year.
- Cherry Tree: This brings seasonal drama and softness, and serves as a focal point in the garden.
Shrubs
Climbing hydrangea is lush and makes even new gardens feel established. Its white blooms add softness and brightness, while its dense foliage creates a sense of intimacy and privacy.
Boxwood contributes definition and a sense of subtle organization. It makes the space feel polished yet still natural.
Perennials
To introduce movement, texture, and color — and to welcome pollinators — we included these plants that also contribute ground-level visual interest to the garden.
- Heuchera
- Lavender
- Sedum
- Black-eyed Susans
- Creeping Thyme
