Mimi's

Launching in SoHo amid NYC’s fro-yo comeback, Mimi’s is easily one of the most talked-about dessert spots in the city right now. With lines out the door, constant buzz, and a steady stream of loyal customers who come for the yogurt but stay for the vibes, Mimi’s plant design goals didn’t center around filling an empty space. Instead, they were after something more intentional to enhance the sense of warmth and connection the unique space already provided.

The Tula House team approached the project by taking cues from the interior of Mimi’s itself. The look is clean, shaped by simple architecture and enhanced with elements of leather, wood, and glass block. Our challenge was to maintain that uncomplicated style while adding natural softness and living texture.

Here, the idea was not to crowd the space with greenery, but to offset the existing design elements with plants that would add contrast and unique structure. We also wanted to remain mindful of the shop’s high traffic and bustling nature; overly fragile or high-maintenance plantings made little sense in a spot as busy as Mimi’s.

The plants we selected serve the space perfectly. Ficus lyrata is incorporated for its height and its strong visual presence. We also turned to Sansevieria because it brings both structure and clean lines to key areas. Parlor palms were chosen for their ability to add movement, complementing the flow of visitors and adding to the energy of the seating areas. 

Where we placed each plant was equally deliberate. They follow the room’s curve, and are tucked in where they matter and make an impact. They are placed low along the banquette, vertically in corners, and sit in just enough spots overhead to pull the eye upward.

Mimi’s loves how the plants seamlessly weave into their space. The greenery doesn’t appear added on, but instead feels like it’s part of the original design language. And at Tula House, we love that we were able to bring an extra layer of life into an environment that’s already full of buzz.
