Rule of Thirds
Rule of Thirds approached Tula House to revamp their interior restaurant gardens and to enliven their event space with new indoor and outdoor plants. Their vision was rooted in contrast: softening an otherwise industrial-feeling warehouse environment with elements that exude warmth and life. Rather than styling the space with greenery as a finishing touch, we developed the goal of making plant life a defining feature.
For Rule of Thirds, what began as a stark, industrial space now unfolds as a warm, natural environment. Guests are welcomed into modern spaces softened by living layers of texture. For our team, this project was an opportunity to stretch our creativity and our skill set. We loved working at a scale that fully demonstrates what holistic plant design can be. From concept to installation to ongoing care, we have transformed the space and now steward it as it continues to grow.
Taking our inspiration from tropical gardens, we knew we wanted to incorporate greenery that felt abundant, dimensional, and immersive. To craft this large-scale tropical installation, we turned to classic plants you would find in the heart of the tropics, such as Ficus elastica, Ficus lyrata, Monstera deliciosa, Philodendron selloum ‘Hope’, Sansevieria zeylanica, Zamioculcas zamiifolia, and Chamaedorea elegans.
These species were chosen for their sweeping architecture, sculptural silhouettes, and lush foliage. Their deep green tones counterbalance the wood, concrete, and metal featured throughout the space, allowing the decor to remain minimal without looking sparse.
With more than one hundred new plantings, this project required a keen eye for the design aspect of plantscaping. We collaborated with designer Gregory Beson to develop custom outdoor planters and indoor suspended shelving to seamlessly integrate the plants into the architecture and aesthetics of the space.
Off-the-rack vessels and shelves would have limited our vision for the space. Taking this custom approach allows the garden to read as intentional and cohesive, not just a collection of plants.
