Sunday In Brooklyn
Looking to revamp both their interior and exterior spaces, Sunday in Brooklyn approached Tula House to support a refresh of their flagship Williamsburg location. They didn’t want to simply fill empty corners during and after their renovation. Instead, the goal was to thoughtfully integrate plant life throughout the space, enhancing the atmosphere and adding vitality to complement the fresh narrative established by the restaurant’s new look.
Collaborating with Tula House proved to be the ideal partnership. Our philosophy of sourcing healthy, extraordinary plant species and intentionally integrating them into sites aligns perfectly with Sunday in Brooklyn’s design ethos. They sought the kind of compelling cohesion that would make their architectural context feel warm and dynamic without distracting from the dining experience.
It was important for our designers and horticulturists to never lose sight of the context. Restaurants can present uniquely challenging conditions for live plants. Lighting changes throughout the day, and heavy foot traffic means delicate species aren’t practical options. We knew we needed to focus our selection on hardy, architectural species that could withstand the demands of a busy hospitality environment while still contributing meaningful visual interest.
We zeroed in on structural plants such as Ficus elastica and Ficus lyrata to provide verticality and serve as anchors throughout the space. Then, to soften sightlines, we worked in lush species like Monstera deliciosa and various Philodendrons. They lent a sense of tropicality and built depth.
Finally, in areas with more variable lighting or higher traffic, we featured resilient plants like Sansevieria and ZZ. Both of these species are known for their durability and low maintenance — a big plus in this bustling Brooklyn hot spot.
We love how this design subtly heightens the sensory experience of dining at Sunday in Brooklyn. The plantings feel visually interesting and harmonious, without overwhelming guests or disrupting operational flow. The strength of this partnership is reflected in the balanced result we achieved — memorable spaces, thriving with life, that elevate the dining experience without making plant care a burden.
