This backyard had plenty of room to work with, but the goal wasn’t to fill every inch of it. We wanted to create a garden that felt lush, private, and settled while still keeping the space open and easy to live in.

Long black planters create the backbone of the garden, layered with ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, trailing evergreens, and climbing wisteria that bring softness and movement throughout the space. Along the back wall, we installed a custom trellis system for the vines to climb across, gradually transforming the existing cinderblock wall into a living green backdrop.

Taller evergreens and small trees add height and privacy where it’s needed without completely closing off the yard. Around the lounge, the planting is looser and more overflowing, while the dining area is framed by sculptural evergreens that give the garden structure and rhythm.

A mix of ribbed and stone planters adds another layer of texture and gives individual trees and shrubs their own presence within the larger garden. The idea was to make the space feel comfortable and lived in, with enough structure to complement the architecture but enough looseness for the planting to keep growing, changing, and getting better over time.
